The Grenfell Tower fire in North Kensington, west London, is one of the worst disasters in modern England history. It started on the fourth floor of the tower just before 1 a.m. BST on June 14. At 4:30 am more than 100 flats caught fire. The fire does not ignite itself for 24 hours.
Rupert Taylor was born and raised in the streets around Grenfell and used to play on football fields under towers. She started volunteering as a youth worker in 2005 and at the time of the fire was manager of a local youth center. Nine children from the youth center died in the tower.
Rupert was on holiday in Gibraltar when he received a call in the early hours of June 14.
“I turned on the news. My heart sank, it was terrible, “he recalled. “We don’t know who is alive.”
He got the first plane back to London and went straight to work helping people affected by the fires. “When I got back, I drove in … the burning smell was real,” he said. “I’m trying to get support for residents roaming the streets trying to find out about their loved ones.”
A few days later, Rupert noticed a young man wandering outside the youth center who looked lost. She asked the man if he was okay and if he wanted to come in and get some supplies. He politely declined but they exchanged phone numbers. The man then came to the center and they started talking. He told Rupert that he was a resident of the tower.
“He looks like a very lonely person,” said Rupert. “He told me that he had lost both of his parents several years ago. A few weeks later, we built a relationship and I noticed he was really struggling. I asked her what helped her through the time when she lost her parents. and the first thing that comes out of his mouth is ‘football’ visit LagaPoker.
