According to Michael Wiesenberg’s “Official Dictionary of Poker,” a poker professional (abbreviated, “pro”) is a player who relies on poker as his main source of income. She depended on victory to support her family and herself. But is this what REAL professionals mean? The word “professional” conveys a much more significant, commendable and profound meaning for me.
In my mind, when I talk about a professional, I think of someone who has earned high respect and respect from the community or, perhaps, even the world, based on his work on behalf of others – perhaps for society and humanity. I think of doctors, school teachers, university professors, lawyers, engineers, scientists – people who are educated and experienced in their chosen field of business, and who then apply this knowledge and skills to the benefit of society or others who seek or need their services . Such people have earned our respect; they are true professionals visit KaptenPoker.
Poker pro doesn’t fit this definition. He plays games for a living; it’s all about the money in his pocket. Poker is the main source of income. He depends on the winnings to support his family and pay the bills. (I hope he is successful and is never in financial trouble.)
We all – for the most part – play for recreation (we are called “recreational players” or, perhaps, amateurs). We enjoy game challenges and social interactions. Of course, we’re also looking for a return winner – more money in our pockets than when we arrived at the casino. Everyone wants to be a winner. But, we don’t think of ourselves as pros. The difference, of course, is that our livelihoods don’t depend on winning (hopefully) – as do “pro poker”.
